Rehired Annuitants

Hoping to start a thread about fed retirees who are looking to return to federal work. Post discussions, links and job announcements regarding the hiring of annuitants and how those in those positions got there and how their jobs are going, etc.

There are many options for federal retirees to return to federal service as a rehired annuitant. There are different rules for FERS and CSRS retirees. In most cases, you will keep your full annuity; however, your new federal salary will be reduced by the amount of your annuity. There are exceptions to this for certain critical positions.

Recent retirees can also return to federal service under a personal services contract. This option is different from the standard rehired annuitant program. Former feds are tasked to perform specific functions under personal services contracts for a defined period. The retiree isn’t considered a federal employee, and payments won’t impact their annuity payments.

I returned to the agency I retired from as a rehired annuitant. It was going pretty well until the DOGE hit and the agency decided that getting rid of us folks would help them get to their reduction goals. It was a little upsetting considering I got no benefits whatsoever, not even TSP or time off. But they did make it clear to us our hours could be cut at any time to include being completely let go.

In an odd twist I will be going back soon as a contractor… at a significantly higher salary.

Go figure.
