The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has proposed a major overhaul of [federal Reduction‑in‑Force (RIF) regulations](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/03/05/2026-04377/reduction-in-force). The revised, streamlined process will be merit‑based, more efficient, and prioritize performance over tenure and length of service when determining which employees will be retained in a RIF.
