Military service time is generally creditable towards your federal civil service retirement if performed under honorable conditions. You must apply for this credit and pay the [military service deposit](https://fedretire.net/retirement-credit-update-for-federal-employees-with-prior-military-service/) before separation from civilian service for retirement. The deposit covers your military basic pay, calculated as a percentage of earnings plus applicable interest. Apply early to avoid the interest penalty.
